Copper deficiency in chicks: effects of ascorbic acid on iron, copper, cytochrome oxidase activity, and aortic mucopolysaccharides.

چکیده
I . Copper deficiency was induced in newly hatched chicks by feeding on a milk-based diet for 12 d ; effects of supplementation with ascorbic acid were studied. 2. Cu deficiency alone resulted in 30% mortality from aortic rupture. This was associated with a 20% increase in total acid mucopolysaccharides in the aorta, manifested as an increase in chondroitin sulphate and a relative decrease in hyaluronic acid. Cytochrome oxidase activity of liver and heart was less than half that of the controls. 3. Supplementing the Cu-deficient diet with 0.5 yo L-ascorbic acid increased mortality to 40%, raised total aortic acid mucopolysaccharides to a higher level, and increased liver iron by

Alleviation of Adverse Effects of Copper on Allium cepa L. by Exogenous Ascorbic Acid Application
Abstract In this study ameliorative effects of ascorbic acid (0.5 mM) on onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Red Azarshahr) under copper stress (Cu: 6.5 μM) were studied. Fresh weights of leaves and roots were reduced in seven week old plants under excess copper condition. Cu stress also reduced membrane stability index in leaves. There was a considerable increase in H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation i...
متن کاملStudies on Copper Metabolism*
The results of studies on certain enzymes, hemin chromoproteins, and iron and copper in the tissues of normal, copper-deficient, and iron-deficient swine are reported in this paper. It has been suggested that the enzymes cytochrome oxidase (l-3), uricase (4), tyrosinase (5), plasma polyphenol oxidase (coeruloplasmin) (6), glutathione oxidase (7), and butyryl coenzyme A dehydrogenase (8) either ...
متن کاملStudies in Biochemical Genetics in Drosophila
The metabolism of the imaginal discs of wild type, miniature, vestigial, and four-jointed varieties of Drosophila was investigated using the Cartesian diver ultramicrorespirometer. Wild type and vestigial wing disc respiration is inhibited by cyanide and azide and thus is mediated by an iron or copper porphyrin system, presumable cytochrome-cytochrome oxidase. Respiration is also inhibited by c...
متن کاملAugmented mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase activity in children with iron deficiency: a tandem between iron and copper?
Introduction Dyshomeostasis of essential trace elements including iron and copper plays a key role in the pathogenesis of a myriad of serious conditions including iron deficiency (ID) anemia, in which impaired cellular energy metabolism is prominent. Although experimental studies documented decreased activity of cytochrome c oxidase (CytOx) in ID, there are not enough clinical data. The present...
متن کاملThe state of the copper in cytochrome c oxidase.
Nutritional studies have long supported the view that copper may be a part of cytochrome c oxidase (l-3). However, direct evidence did not become available until Eichel et al. (4) found that there was a good correlation between the copper content and the a-absorption by the reduced enzyme in fractions of heart mitochondria prepared with deoxycholate. More recently, Green et al. (5) and Okunuki ...
